How much CCTV storage do you need?

Build your camera setup

Choose a disk size and camera count, then set the resolution, codec and frame rate. These settings suggest a bitrate; you can also enter your own bitrate using the slider.

Compare continuous recording with motion recording, add audio, and select how many days of footage you want to retain. Run the simulation to see storage fill and overwriting begin.

How the estimate works

GB per day = total average Mbps × 10.8

Retention days = storage in GB ÷ GB per day

The model uses decimal storage (1 TB = 1,000 GB). Motion mode reduces video by the selected activity percentage. Audio adds 0.064 Mbps per camera continuously. Actual disk overhead and variable bitrate can change retention.

Does this connect to my cameras?

No. The camera previews are sample clips streamed from Wikimedia Commons, with image fallbacks. They are illustrative and do not affect the calculation. No camera access is requested.

Why does changing codec affect storage?

The calculator changes its suggested bitrate when you select H.264 or H.265. Storage depends on the actual bitrate your cameras record; adjust the bitrate slider to match your system.
